You need the answers now, and they live in your documents. You can paste them into a public chat like Claude, but then the text is out on someone else's servers. That is a bad fit for patient care, universities, government work, or anyone who wants to keep the material close.
The version I care about runs on hardware you control. Retrieval means we find the relevant pages, put them in the prompt, and ask the model to answer from those pages. Look things up first. Then answer.
